Minister of Interior Expects New Traffic Law Will Reduce Traffic Accidents

PHNOM PENH: The Minister of Interior and Chairman of the National Committee for Road Safety, DPM Sar Kheng, stated his expectation that when the new traffic law is issued and put in place, traffic accidents in Cambodia will be reduced.

After the meeting to review the results of road safety work in 2022 and to set the direction for 2023, DPM Sar Kheng told reporters that the new traffic law passed by the Road Traffic Safety Committee will be sent to the National Council for writing in the Khmer language. He said he hopes this new law will help reduce traffic accidents, while acknowledging that the new law was entirely amended to address some inconsistencies.

"I hope to help reduce traffic accidents because the old law has some inconsistencies, so I think [the new law] can help to [reduce a lot of traffic accidents]," said the DPM.

He also stated that the new road traffic law will be another mechanism forcing the people to fear the law and ensure safety, in addition to the mechanism revoking driver's licenses when caught driving under the influence. DPM Sar Kheng also encouraged people to report cases of irregular law enforcement by authorities to promote better law enforcement.

It should be noted that between 1 September to 31 December 2022, under the mechanism to revoke licenses from drivers breaking the law, a total of 8,513 driver's license points were deducted, involving 7,477 light vehicles.
